Le Scat Noir 228

October 1st, 2017 · 1 Comment

You can now obtain the 228th edition of Le Scat Noir, over here. This one contains another page of my musical instrument drawings, the full score of my song “Buenas Noches, Little Roaches,” and my translation of Alphonse Allais’s story “Shocking.” There are many other things in it too, I might add. And it’s now $5, so pony up!

I neglected to mention the last issue, what with getting The Doug Skinner Songbook out. That one is full of Skinner stuff: my musical instrument drawings, a short story called “The Cinematographer and the Megachiropteran,” and translation/adaptations of short Oulipian works by Raymond Queneau and Georges Perec. And it’s the last free issue, available here.

Dagger 1

September 26th, 2017 · 1 Comment

I have three (you can count them) pages of comics in the first issue of Dagger magazine. My contributions are “Cupid” and “How Pleasant to Know Mr. Skinner”; the magazine is a glossy production, too big for my scanner, edited by Don Jolly and Matt James. More info here.

The Doug Skinner Songbook

The Doug Skinner Songbook is now available! This elegant oversized paperback contains 46 of my songs, including such favorites as “Buenas Noches, Little Roaches,” “Love Me Unconditionally,” “My Pal Satan,” and “Bloated Plutocrats on Parade”! They’re “chillingly zany” (New York Times); they’re “scathingly witty… lullabies etched in acid” (Metro Magazine), and now you can add them to your music rack! It’s 116 pages, and it’s published by the intrepid Black Scat Books. And it’s available on Amazon. Pick up a copy, and rev up those vocal cords!

The Renaissance Faire

A song about that peculiar American institution, the Renaissance Faire. Here, as usual, is the beginning. You can find the whole song in The Doug Skinner Songbook, coming soon from Black Scat Books, and you can listen to it on my album That Regrettable Weekend.

Medulla Oblongata

My old band, White Knuckle Sandwich, often performed this lively and informative number. When we spelled out “oblongata,” Anne and Jen pointed to their T and A, which are other parts of the human anatomy.

A Concert in Lily Dale

July 30th, 2017 · Comments Off on A Concert in Lily Dale

On July 28, 2017, I found myself in Lily Dale, NY, a center of Spiritualism, performing in an evening organized by Shannon Taggart. I performed what I called music attributed to ultraterrestrials, using a term favored by the late John Keel for non-human entities. My program included fairy music from England, Ireland, Wales, and Norway; the “trowie tunes” of the Shetland Islands in Scotland; the call of the banshee; the “outer space music” of Philip Rodgers; and channeled music by Rosemary Brown and Gustav BrabbĂ©e. I concluded with some of the tunes I’ve heard in dreams. Playing fairy music for Spiritualists! What next?
