From 1994, clangorous counterpoint travels between the letters of the word “fiction.”  We separate narrative into fiction or fact; music deserves the same courtesy.

In 1984, the Tallgirls (Pamela Boucher, Jill Daly, Harriet Garfinkle, and Marci Paulsen) commissioned me to write a piece for them. I wrote a one-act play about two waitresses and two customers, developing (I hope) a strong comic character for each of them. It was performed at Footwork Dance Studio, in San Francisco, in November of that year.

Sometime in the early ’80s, sex work activist Scarlot Harlot asked me to portray a phone sex addict for a slide show she was doing. Naturally, I agreed; I had, after all, a number of prop and toy phones that I used in my shows. She used the images in this birthday card.

According to the dictionary, a “stint” is a “a period of time spent in a particular activity.”  That certainly fits this piece for viola and piano, built up of repeated riffs.

Following the Thanksgiving show, KPFA invited me back for Valentine’s Day in 1978.  I sang some songs, played piano, and played 78s.
