I drew this cartoonish flyer for a lecture/dem that Bill Irwin gave at Oberlin College, back in 1973 or so. It was so long ago that it was printed in purple ink on a mimeo machine. We later went on to more substantial collaborations.

All Aboard for Mars
June 1st, 2012 · 4 Comments
“All Aboard for Mars” is a cartoon slide show using all of my characters from “Doug and Mike’s Adult Entertainment.” I’d grown quite familiar with them; and wondered what they would be like in another setting, without Mike’s characters. I sketched the whole business with pencil and markers, rather than my usual ink, and performed […]
Adult Comedy Christmas Show

In 1989, Jim Turner and I traveled out to San Francisco to put on a Christmas show. It was a cavalcade of bits, none having to do with Christmas, and must have perplexed the San Franciscans. One interesting bit of trivia: the show was produced by Bill Talen, before he entered his chrysalis and emerged […]
Art Against AIDS

In 1989, Art Against AIDS produced a PSA that recreated the cover of Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band, to a tune by the B-52s. I was one of many (well, two of many, counting Eddie) to take my place around the drum. It was quite a crowd.
Away We Go!

Before he wrote the musical Rent, Jonathan Larson collaborated with another songwriter, Bob Golden, on Away We Go!, a children’s video about transportation. I had met Jonathan through New York Theater Workshop, and he called on me to operate the newt puppet that you see here. I also had a cameo as a […]
An Attractive Production

I put on An Attractive Production at Dance Theater Workshop in 1985. It was a busy year, and I was also moving back and forth between NYC and San Francisco. I’m surprised I got it on its feet at all. Still, it seems to have gone well.
Anecdote

A setting of my translation of a poem by La Fontaine (one of his tales, not one of his fables), for voice and ‘cello. Once Sister Jean had borne a child, Her piety was unexcelled. The other nuns, though undefiled, Had cravings they had not dispelled. “Our Jean,” the Abbess said with pride, “Has set […]
Aubade

This “Aubade” is quieter than most. I don’t want to wake the lovers too harshly. A simple tune repeats, gathering more counterpoint, until it fades away. Here’s the beginning; sh.
Aretino In Solrésol
July 29th, 2011 · 1 Comment
I wanted to demonstrate the artificial musical language Solrésol for my show The Musical Underbelly. I decided that one of the famously smutty sonnets of Pietro Aretino would make an interesting example. I later expanded this for my third string quartet, which is based on several Solrésol translations of Aretino. Here’s the first part of […]
